Description
This is an update rulebook from the 4th printing and beyond of Black Sonata. The version number is 20210104 (found on the next to last page of the book no matter what version you have). There were 3 other printings of the rulebook:
- Version 20181019 – This was the original printing of the base game. The latest rulebook has significant changes from the original, including rules clarifications based on feedback from users and fixes an error in one of the optional hard sequences on page 22.
- Version 20200416 – This was the 2nd printing as a part of the Fair Youth expansion crowdfunding campaign. The latest rulebook has a few minor additional clarifications and fixes an error in one of the optional hard sequences on page 22.
- Version 20200629 – This was the 3rd printing shortly after the Fair Youth expansion crowdfunding campaign. The latest rulebook has only minor changes fixing typos.

Our recommendations:
- If you’re new to Black Sonata and have one of the older versions (20181019, 20200416) you would probably get some use out of the newer, clearer rulebook.
- If you’re new to Black Sonata and have the 20200629 version you probably don’t need a new rulebook and can look up the minor changes on BoardGameGeek.
- If you’re a veteran Black Sonata player and you have a previous version of the rulebook you probably don’t need the updated rulebook and can just look up any differences on BoardGameGeek.
- If you’re a completionist like us then you probably should get a copy… 😉
